How to Install Extensions in
After Effects

Extensions are powerful add-ons with rich interfaces. Here's how to install them using the ZXP Installer.

What are Extensions?

Extensions (also called CEP panels) are more advanced than scripts. They're built with web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and offer:

  • Modern, polished user interfaces
  • Internet connectivity (cloud services, stock footage, etc.)
  • Cross-app compatibility (Premiere, Photoshop, etc.)

Extensions come as .zxp files and require a special installer.

Method: ZXP Installer (Recommended)

The easiest way to install extensions is using a free ZXP installer app.

Step 1: Download a ZXP Installer

Choose one of these free tools:

Step 2: Install the Extension

  1. Close After Effects completely.
  2. Open your ZXP Installer app.
  3. Drag and drop the .zxp file onto the installer window.
  4. Wait for the installation to complete.
  5. Open After Effects.
  6. Find your extension in Window → Extensions → [Extension Name].

Extensions vs Scripts Location

Unlike scripts (which appear directly in the Window menu), extensions appear under Window → Extensions.

Troubleshooting

Extension not showing up?

  • Make sure you closed After Effects before installing.
  • Restart your computer after installation.
  • Check that the extension supports your After Effects version.

Enable unsigned extensions (developers)

If you're developing extensions or using unsigned ones, you may need to enable debug mode. This involves editing a configuration file. Search for "enable CEP debug mode" for your specific OS version.
